The Lady Blues girls hockey team will raise money for mental health at home opener

The area's only girls high school hockey team opens the season Nov. 2-3 in Davenport. The games are free, with donations going to The Gray Matters Collective.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — The puck is about to drop on the newest season of Lady Blues hockey

The Lady Blues are the area's only high school hockey team for girls. The season's home opener will be Nov. 2 and 3 at The River's Edge in Davenport. Saturday's game will be at 6 p.m. and Sunday's will start at noon.

The games are free to attend, but donations will be accepted all weekend long. There will also be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and gift baskets up for grabs. All of the proceeds will be split between the Lady Blues and The Gray Matters Collective, a local mental health nonprofit.

The Gray Matters Collective began as a mental health campaign at Augustana College. Today, it's a nonprofit dedicated to mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Several of the Lady Blues are also part of TGMC.

This year's squad has 13 active players from eighth grade up to seniors in high school. The girls come from all over the Quad City region, even as far away as Cedar Rapids.

This is the third season for the Lady Blues. The team begins its season away from home with a tournament in Des Moines on Oct. 26 and 27.

News 8 profiled the team in 2023. Before the Lady Blues formed, many of the players had grown up traveling hundreds of miles to play on other teams. At the time of our profile, several of the young athletes spoke of paving the way for the future generation of girls hockey players.

"We definitely feel like we have to build something that will last for a while so that we have girls that come after us that love the sport as much as we do," forward Cece Spector said.
