What holiday items you can and can't recycle

From Christmas lights to cookie tins, the folks at Midland Davis Corporation break down what should be pitched & what should live to see another holiday season.

MOLINE, Ill. — The holiday season is in full swing and with it comes cookie tins, wrapping paper, Christmas lights and a whole bunch of items that find their way into the trash.

However, it can be confusing to know what you can and cannot recycle versus what needs to go in the garbage.

To help, Midland Davis Corporation in Moline has set out drop-off boxes for anyone wishing to recycle holiday items. They also joined The Current on News 8 to discuss what can and cannot be dropped off. You can watch the full interview in the above video.

Bottom line:

  • Metallic wrapping paper should not be recycled but other forms can be. Many wrapping paper companies now print on the paper or the label if it's recyclable or not.
  • Metal cookie tins are good to be recycled, as well as cards and envelopes.
  • Christmas lights and ribbons can be recycled, but you're asked to not place these in recycle bins. Instead, Midland Davis says they should be brought to the company separately and then Midland Davis can buy them. Once they get all tangled up in the rest of the recyclables they become expensive and time-consuming to untangle.

This year, Midland Davis has drop off bins outside of their Moline headquarters for you to deposit your recyclables for free. Hours are from 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. on weekdays and 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays.

Tune into The Current from 4 to 5 p.m. on weekdays to catch even more live interviews impacting you, your family and your hometown as well as all of the biggest headlines of the day.
