SAVANNA, Ill. — Havencrest Castle, a 63-room, five-story castle nestled in Savanna, Illinois, is opening its doors for public tours this month. Tucked away by trees on a hilltop, the property dates back to the late 1800s but its most recent owners are who turned it into the castle known today.
According to the castle's website, childhood sweethearts Alan and Adrienne St. George bought the mansion in 1976 and "began their lifelong mission of expanding and decorating the home in the manner of the 'American Aristocracy.'"
For 31 years, the couple turned 22 rooms into 63, creating a theme for each one and adding art to every corner. The Latin phrase "Semper Nos," meaning "Always Us," can be found in paintings, sculptures, stained glass and more throughout the castle. It was the couple's expression of "Love and marriage going on beyond life," according to the website.
Adrienne passed away in 2006, but Alan continues to live in the house curated around their love for each other. He opens the castle only twice a year for tours. They're offered every Saturday and Sunday during May and October starting at 10 a.m. with the last tour admitted at 4 p.m. Savanna city officials say Alan will greet visitors in the ballroom, and people are encouraged to take the time to talk with him about the home.
"Love and beauty fill every corner of this one-of-a-kind castle," the website reads. "Visitors are left with an unforgettable experience of beauty, elegance, and fantasy embraced by a never-ending love story."
