BETTENDORF, Iowa — The 26th annual Gilda's Club Blessing Tree is now accepting decoration sponsorships.
You can sponsor a light, bow or ornament in memory of, or in celebration of, a special person in your life. While many people use it to honor someone battling cancer, it isn't a requirement. You can purchase a light, bow or ornament here or by calling 563-326-7504.
Those wishing to celebrate someone through the Blessing Tree can do so through Jan. 3, 2025.
Proceeds from the Blessing Tree benefit the no-cost programs at Cancer Support Community Iowa & NW Illinois at Gilda's Club. The group offers emotional and mental support to those battling cancer and their families, as well as a variety of programs including a free meal fridge and a wig workshop.
The Blessing Tree stands at Be the Light Park on Bettendorf's State Street. The 32-foot tall tree will be lit on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The event will run from 6 to 7 p.m. and will feature cocoa, cookies, conversation and carolers. All of the names of loved ones recognized will be read at 6:15, followed by the illumination. The tree will be lit through Jan. 3.
“We are so grateful for the support of Ascentra Credit Union, the Downtown Bettendorf Organization and the City of Bettendorf on our new location for the Blessing Tree. The tree found its home on River Drive (in Davenport) for over 20 years where it became a symbol of the holiday season and the hope it brought to many as we honor and remember those that have had an impact on our life," Joy Bush, executive director of Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club, said in a press release. “After closing our Clubhouse on River Drive in 2020 we wanted to find a new place for it to be at home. A place for families and friends to gather, remember and share memories during the holiday season. Finding its home at the Be The Light Park just seemed so fitting, knowing what it symbolizes and the impact that Paul and Dale both had on our community, we feel like it is where it is meant to be.”
