GENESEO, Ill. — Geneseo wants you to get into the holiday spirit at its annual Christmas tradition - with a twist!
The Geneseo Christmas Open House will be on Friday, Nov. 15 from 4-7 p.m. in downtown Geneseo. At that time, the city will hold the first lighting of its brand new Christmas tree.
Earlier this year, an arborist advised Geneseo that its City Christmas Tree was at extreme risk of failure and should be taken down for safety purposes. The tree had served as the centerpiece of the town's holiday celebrations for more than 30 years.
In June, Geneseo celebrated the tree one final time with 'The Last Lighting,' which brought more than 800 people to downtown. Following the ceremony it was taken down and a new platform was built.
The new tree is artificial, which the city says might take people some time to get used to. However, Zack Sullivan, Executive Director of the Geneseo Chamber of Commerce, says the new tree is so bright and beautiful, he doesn't think the crowds will mind the switch.
'The First Lighting' will take place at 6 p.m. after a countdown from Santa and Mrs. Claus. The street will be closed off and everyone is welcome to enjoy music, holiday treats and luminaires.
Of course, that's not all happening at the Open House event. There will also be free horse and wagon rides through town.
Downtown Geneseo will be filled with holiday decorations and stores will be open late for candlelight shopping. Shoppers supporting Geneseo businesses get cards stamped for their purchases. For every $100 spent, they enter into a drawing to win prizes, gift certificates and more.
Following the Open House, the city's Christmas Walk and parade will be on Saturday, Dec. 14.
