Free, indoor autism acceptance walk happening in Rock Island

The event will run from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27. April is Autism Acceptance Month. The CDC says 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Autism Society of the Quad-Cities (ASQC) will host its annual walk to celebrate autism acceptance on Saturday, April 27 at Augustana College's PepsiCo Center at 1025 30th St.

This free event will run from 9 to 11 a.m. with the walk beginning at 9:30.

April is Autism Acceptance Month. This month and year-round, ASQC partners with the Autism Society of America to support and recognize the variety of experiences in the autism community, according to a press release from ASQC.

"The ASQC believes the world should recognize and accept the ways the autism community experiences and improves life in the Quad-Cities," the release said.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says one in 36 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. More than seven million people in the U.S. are on the autism spectrum.

"Recognizing this, the ASQC continues to see the need for education, support and advocacy in the Quad-Cities to maximize the potential of people with Autism," ASQC said in the release.

The nonprofit ASQC was founded in 2004 and has held the autism acceptance walk almost annually for the past decade.
