PRINCETON, Iowa — Have you heard of horse therapy?
The professional title, 'equine therapy,' refers to a psychotherapy practice where individuals and groups spend time with horses to treat one's emotional, physical and mental health. It's used across the country for a variety of conditions, including trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD and more.
Locally, Excelsior Ranch in Princeton, Iowa, is inviting the public to a special open house on Sept. 11 from 1 to 7 p.m. Community members are welcome to stop in and learn about the benefits of equine-assisted therapy, meet the team, meet the horses, tour the facility and learn about volunteer opportunities.
Then later in the week, Excelsior Ranch is offering free, half-day workshops for military members, veterans and first responders. The workshops run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 12, 13 and 14. Attendees will learn about horse and human psychology, get to interact with the horses and study how trauma impacts our brain.
