BIGGSVILLE, Ill. — Step into fall with some thrilling mystery books!
Every other Wednesday on our 4 p.m. show, The Current, we bring you a book-club-style segment called "Current Reads." We chat with libraries all over our viewing area to hear what people are reading in their community. For this edition, we're headed to Biggsville, Illinois, and the Henderson County Public Library.
Library Director Yesenia Lambert joined us on The Current to discuss the top mystery stories readers in the area can't put down:
- "We Solve Murders: A Novel" by Richard Osman follows an iconic new detective duo. Steve Wheeler is enjoying his retired life, doing the odd bit of investigation work every once in a while, but mostly content with familiar routines. Instead, his daughter-in-law, Amy Wheeler, thinks adrenaline is good for the soul. Amy is currently on a remote island protecting a world-famous author when a dead body and a bag of money throw things into chaos. Amy must send an SOS to the only person she trusts, which begins a thrilling race around the world to outsmart a killer.
- "Passions in Death: An Eve Dallas Novel" by J. D. Robb is about a wedding party turned into a murder scene. When a girls' night out in Manhattan leaves a bride lying in a pool of blood, witnesses are hard to come by, but bad memories keep flooding back for Lt. Eve Dallas who once suffered an assault in the very same room. With the help of her husband, Roarke, Eve needs to find this killer who took away a young couple's dreams before their honeymoon could even begin.
- "The Boyfriend" by Freida McFadden is a dark story about obsession and the things we do for love. Sydney Shaw has had terrible luck with dating... until she hits the jackpot. Her new boyfriend seems perfect in every way. But the brutal murder of a young woman — the latest in a string of deaths — leads police to a mysterious man who dates his victims before he kills them. Sydney can't shake the feeling that her own boyfriend may not be as perfect as he seems, and if she isn't careful, she could be the killer's next victim.
And with Christmas right around the corner, the Henderson County Library wants to help you get into the holiday spirit.
The library is continuing its Gingerbread Houses Program for the 24th year, making and selling gingerbread house kits filled with everything you would need. In 2023, the library made 600 houses. Call the Library at 309-627-2450 to reserve your gingerbread house for in-house decorating or taking it to-go.
Plus, if you're looking for the perfect gift for a book lover in your life, why not try a book ornament? The library invites the public to build their own ornament and fill it with mini versions of their favorite books.
On Oct. 23, the library officially opened its Memorial Music Garden to the public. The accessible, sensory-friendly community playground is the only one in the area. It was made possible thanks to donations from the community and the American Library Association Libraries Transforming Communities Grant.
Tune into The Current from 4 to 5 p.m. on weekdays to catch live interviews impacting you, your family and your hometown as well as all of the biggest headlines of the day.
