'One of the most rewarding things I have ever done' | 12 Augustana students volunteering free tax help

Local residents can receive free tax filing assistance from the students. In turn, the students say they gain experience, communication and problem-solving skills.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Tax season is underway and Augustana College students will once again be helping Quad Cities residents file their returns this year.

12 students will be volunteering through the QC Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program led by United Way Quad Cities. In 2023, 3,301 people got tax help from the program, and those participants received nearly $3.1 million in federal refund dollars.

“Augustana students have been participating in the VITA program for over 20 years,” Olivia Melton, associate professor of accounting, said. “This initiative enables students to actively contribute to their local community, breaking free from the confines of the ‘Augie bubble’ and fostering a broader understanding of real-world scenarios.”

More information on United Way's tax help program, including eligibility requirements, can be found here.

Augustana students and volunteers in the program Ethan Brood and Blake Oliver joined The Current on News 8 to talk more about the impact of the program not only for them but for the community as well. You can watch their interview in the above video.
