Driver arrested in fatal Bettendorf crash

19-year-old Alexander McNicol faces two counts of homicide by vehicle and an OWI charge in the death of 18-year-old Carter Fix.

BETTENDORF, Iowa — A man has been arrested in a fatal Bettendorf crash that killed 18-year-old Carter Fix.

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, Bettendorf police arrested 19-year-old Alexander McNicol and charged him with homicide by vehicle while operating under the influence, homicide by vehicle while reckless driving and operating a vehicle while under the influence. 

According to arrest records, McNicol lost control of his vehicle while driving south on the 700 block of 15th Street on Friday, Aug. 16, reaching speeds of up to 45 miles per hour in a residential area with a speed limit of 25 miles per hour, and he crashed into a parked vehicle. Fix was killed in the crash.

An arrest report said that McNicol admitted to driving the vehicle and drinking alcohol before the crash, and an arresting officer noted the smell of alcohol on his breath and said he failed a field sobriety test. According to a blood test, McNicol had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.154% and also tested positive for marijuana.

McNicol was booked into the Scott County Jail and released after posting $25,000 bond. His arraignment is set for Thursday, Oct. 3.
