DAVENPORT, Iowa — There's a lot of money to be made on the stock market, but learning to spot a good investment takes some real skill. Fortunately, local students are getting a chance to practice.
Junior Achievement hosted their annual Stock Market Challenge at St. Ambrose University on Oct. 12. More than 100 students from 15 different high schools joined the competition, where they were able to invest and trade fake money in a simulated stock exchange.
While the competition gives those students the chance to increase their financial literacy, organizers say they're also developing some other key skills.
"We're already seeing a little bit (of) the soft skills, that communication," Dougal Nelson, CEO of Junior Achievement, said. "They're networking amongst each other. They're meeting kids from other high schools so it's a great way for them to interact and get to know each other."
And it's not just teenagers who are getting to test their luck. JA is also holding a competition for teams from 19 local companies, where they'll be able to invest in the same simulated stock market as the students.
