Man arrested in connection to November shooting in Sterling

STERLING, Ill. — Update as of 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 7: Dayton Hicks, 28, who was wanted in connection to a Nov. 9 shots fired call, has been arrested, according to the Sterling Police Department. 

Update as of 4:15 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 9: The Sterling Police Department has announced that Dayton Hicks, 28, is wanted in connection to Thursday morning's shooting. 

He is wanted on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact local law enforcement. The Sterling Police Department can be reached at (815) 632-6600. Those who want to stay anonymous are asked to call the Whiteside County Crimestoppers at (815) 625-7867.

Sterling Police and Illinois State Police are investigating a scene Thursday morning after a report of gunshots heard in a Sterling neighborhood.

The call initially came in on Nov. 9 shortly before 7 a.m. for gunfire in the 800 block of East 5th Street.

Upon arrival, police found two vehicles that had been hit by bullets, but found no other areas damaged and no injuries reported by residents. 

Police believe this is an isolated incident and that there's no threat to the public.

At this time this scene remains active, and more information will be released after an investigation has been completed.
