DAVENPORT, Iowa — Repairs are underway after a sinkhole opened up due to a water main break behind the Village Shopping Center in Davenport on Wednesday.
According to an NAI Ruhl Commercial property manager for the shopping center, the hole was created by a water main break that eroded the asphalt above it.
The water line was a private, domestic line off of an Iowa American Water main line.
The hole is about six feet wide and has grown in length as construction crews have arrived to make repairs to the water main line.
The property manager confirmed that one driver accidentally drove into a weak area of the asphalt which resulted in the front of their vehicle sinking into the hole. This occurred before the weak area was sectioned off.
The area, which is near the Iowa DMV location, is closed off to through traffic until repairs are made.
