Scott County officials say they're investigating a collision between a freight train and a garbage truck that ejected the truck driver and injured three people.

SCOTT COUNTY, Iowa — Update, 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2: The Scott County Sheriff's Office has identified 23-year-old Caleb Fisher of Maquoketa as the driver of the garbage truck involved in this accident. Fisher was charged with failing to obey slow/check at a railroad crossing and failing to maintain a safety belt.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office says they're investigating a collision between a freight train and a garbage truck that ejected the truck driver through the front windshield on Thursday, Aug. 1.

The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 67 and 245th Avenue, between Bettendorf and LeClaire. A sheriff's office press release said the truck was driving northbound on 245th Avenue when it failed to stop and yield the right of way to the westbound train and was struck on its passenger side.

The driver of the garbage truck was ejected from the front windshield upon collision, according to officials.

The train, consisting of 25 cars and two locomotives, went into an emergency stop and pushed the truck down the tracks until eventually coming to a stop.

News 8 learned from officials at the scene that the truck driver was able to walk to meet with first responders.

The driver of the garbage truck and two train crew members were all transported to local hospitals and are expected to be released with minor injuries.
