SCOTT COUNTY, Iowa — Several phone scams have been going on around Scott County, with scammers pretending to be a family member who has recently been in a car crash and needs to be bailed out of jail.

According to the Scott County Sheriff's Office, a resident in rural Scott County received a phone call from a person who identified themselves as a family member. The complainant was told the relative was involved in a car crash and there was an attorney on the phone who told the complainant they needed cash to bond out their family member from jail. Afterward, an unknown male came to the residence in a dark-colored SUV, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Another complainant called the Sheriff's Office to report a phone call from a male who claimed he worked at a bank. The complainant was told one of their social media accounts was compromised and they should transfer money from their bank account into a Bitcoin account.

A third complaint stated that the caller told them they were a family member involved in a car crash and needed money to get out of jail. The suspect showed up to the complainant's residence in a small blue-colored SUV. After the complainant told the suspect they were going to call 911 to confirm the accident and arrest, they left.

These events happened throughout February and March. Scott County Sheriff's Office recommends calling 911 immediately after receiving a call from an unknown caller asking for money. And to never provide anyone information over the phone before contacting law enforcement.
