Inmate dies at Scott County Jail, sheriff says

The 52-year-old Davenport man had an ongoing medical condition and had been placed on a 15-minute medical monitoring interval since Aug. 14.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — An inmate at the Scott County Jail has died after suffering a medical emergency, the sheriff's office said.

Just before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, the Scott County Sheriff's Office said 52-year-old Jim Roger Johnston of Davenport was found unresponsive in his cell. Johnston had an ongoing medical condition and had been placed on a 15-minute medical monitoring interval since Aug. 14. The sheriff's office said there was no foul play and that a 24-hour surveillance camera showed he suffered the medical incident while eating his evening meal.

Medical staff began performing CPR when they found Johnston and he was eventually transported to a local hospital where he later died. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 23. The sheriff's office said he is not being displayed on the jail's public website.

Johnston was arrested back in May and charged with assault on persons in certain occupations. Arrest records show he allegedly spit on a nurse who was his healthcare provider.
