Man arrested in Rock Island shooting, victim seriously wounded

53-year-old Monty Lewis was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm. A male victim has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — A suspect is in custody after a Tuesday morning shooting in Rock Island that left a man with life-threatening injuries.

According to the Rock Island Police Department, officers responded to a shooting on the 3700 block of Fifth Street shortly after 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Officers found a 57-year-old man suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound to his chest. He was hospitalized for his injuries and is in stable condition.

Police identified 53-year-old Monty Lewis as the suspect, and he was located in a vehicle about an hour after the shooting. Police said Lewis led police on a brief vehicle pursuit before he was taken into custody in the area of 6th Street and 18th Avenue without incident.  

Lewis was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm. The incident is still under investigation.
