ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The City of Rock Island and Mayor Mike Thoms are seeking candidates for the Third Ward city council position, according to a Friday news release.
Last week, the city announced that current Third Ward Alderwoman Judith Gilbert would be resigning from her position effective Jan. 12, 2024, to move closer to family in Eldridge.
Anyone interested in the position must reside in the third ward, which covers part of southwest Rock Island. Candidates should send a resume and letter stating why they would be the ideal candidate to Mayor Thoms at thoms.mike@rigov.org by Feb. 2 at 5 p.m.
After reviewing the candidates, Mayor Thoms will nominate a candidate, subject to city council approval, to serve the rest of Gilbert's term which ends in May 2025.
Gilbert bids farewell
Alderwoman Gilbert is hosting a final third ward meeting on Saturday, Dec. 30 from 9-11 a.m. at the Hauberg Estate Carriage House in Rock Island.
All are welcome to stop by and voice concerns about the third ward or the city in general, or to simply say farewell to Alderwoman Gilbert. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP to Executive Assistant Colleen Skolrood at 309-732-2012.
