ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Three Rock Island city officials recently traveled to Washington D.C. to lobby for more federal funding to go toward city projects.

The group's requests included funding for reconstructing 11th Street, housing rehabilitation, new development projects, and a request for FEMA grants to install electric pump stations that would be used during floods.

According to a press release from the city, Mayor Mike Thoms, Community and Economic Development Director Miles Brainard, and Community Development Manager Nichole Mata made the trip alongside former Democratic Rep. Cheri Bustos.

The group met with numerous Quad City area legislators including Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Illinois; Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois; Rep. Eric Sorensen, D-Rockford; Rep. Darin LaHood, R-Peoria; Transportation Sec. Pete Buttigieg; and numerous officials with the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“It is my hope that meeting with federal officials in person will strengthen our requests for funding of major city projects,” Thoms said in a press release. “We are always working together to find ways to ease the financial burden from taxpayers as we strive to make needed infrastructure improvements in the City.”
