ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — After a three-year absence, Rock Island High School will have a school resource officer in its halls.
The SRO program was paused back in 2019 due a lack of staff, but the Rock Island Police Department says they now have the personnel to bring the position back.
"We're actually to a point where we haven't seen in a long time, but we still have a lot of personnel going through training, so they're going through that process, which is a very lengthy process," Rock Island Police Chief Richard Landi said.
The Rock Island City Council first voted to approve the position at their meeting on Monday, Nov. 13. The next day, the Rock Island-Milan School Board also voted in favor of adding an SRO, as well. The position will cost slightly less than $119,000 annually.
The officer's first day is expected to be Jan. 3.
