ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Civil War monument that long stood on the old Rock Island County Courthouse lawn is much closer to a needed makeover.
Portions of the monument's pedestal were taken apart on Tuesday, Oct. 29 in preparation for the final restoration.
Ten years ago, a passerby noticed the soldier atop the pedestal appeared ready to fall off. The 2,000-pound statue was removed and is now being replaced by a brand-new bronze soldier and plaques bearing soldiers' names. The replacement soldier was designed by Moline artist John Ketner of Lost Art Studio.
Rock Island County officials haven't said when the project will be done. The monument was originally dedicated all the way back in 1869.
