ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Quad Cities golf lovers will have to say goodbye to a local landmark.
At their meeting on Monday, Aug. 26, the Rock Island City Council approved a plan to demolish the clubhouse at Saukie Golf Course. The demolition is expected to cost less than $14,000, with a replacement carrying a price tag of about $850,000.
City leaders said they hope to break ground on the project sometime in the fall.
Rock Island received more than $900,000 from Illinois' Park and Recreational Facility Construction Act grant program that will go towards replacing the 95-year-old clubhouse. Officials said the new clubhouse will have meeting spaces, indoor hitting bays, two golf simulators, course-facing outdoor seating and more. It will also have a fully accessible starting and ending point for golfers while providing a year-round, all-season space for learning and enrichment activities.
According to officials, the renovations are desperately needed, as the current clubhouse is beyond its useful life and in a state of deterioration.
