Kevin Maynard to resign as Rock Island Third Ward alderman

Maynard was appointed in February after former alderwoman Judith Gilbert retired in January.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Rock Island Third Ward Alderman Kevin Maynard is expected to resign his seat.

City officials said Maynard will resign effective Tuesday, Oct. 29 following the evening's city council meeting. Maynard was appointed in February after former alderwoman Judith Gilbert retired in January, but he accepted a new position with Florida State University.

“It has been my pleasure to serve the Third Ward in Rock Island. While it is hard to leave, I know the City of Rock Island is in great hands with the current council members and the incredible staff in place,” Maynard said in a press release. “In my short tenure, I am proud of what the City of Rock Island has accomplished. I look forward to visiting Rock Island in the near future to see all the work that has been started and completed.”

Mayor Mike Thoms must nominate someone to replace Maynard within 60 days of his resignation. Once that nomination is made, the city council has 30 days to confirm or deny it.

A new council member will be elected during the April 2025 municipal elections.
