Black Hawk College putting on resource fair for anyone impacted by layoffs

Staff members of the Illinois Department of Employment Security will be available to help with unemployment applications.

MOLINE, Ill — Editor's note: A Black Hawk College spokesperson initially said on Monday that the event was for Deere employees impacted by recent layoffs. However, on Tuesday, they said the event is open to anyone in the area recently impacted by layoffs. They added that the Illinois Department of Employment Security, not Employment Services, was co-hosting the event. The story has been updated to reflect this new information from BHC.

Black Hawk College is teaming up with the Illinois Department of Employment Security for a resource fair to help those recently impacted by layoffs in the area.

The fair will be hosted at Black Hawk College's Quad Cities campus in Building 1's upper lobby on Tuesday, Sept. 3 and Wednesday, Sept. 4. It'll last from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

Organizers said that employers will be available to speak with job hunters, along with other resources. IDES staff will also be able to help visitors with unemployment applications.

Since May, Moline-based company John Deere has announced layoffs impacting more than 1,500 workers at its production facilities and headquarters.

Over 300 salaried John Deere employees were laid off in Illinois on July 24. It comes after Deere confirmed in late June that it would be reducing its salaried workforce by the end of July.

A total of 298 employees at John Deere World Headquarters in Moline and 21 employees at Harvester Works in Moline were laid off on July 24. Over 500 employees were laid off at production facilities in Davenport and East Moline in June. News 8 also previously reported that 170 workers were also laid off on July 24 at three Deere facilities in Iowa.
