MOLINE, Ill. — Quad Cities area veterans traveled to Washington D.C. on Tuesday, Sept. 17 as part of the 60th Honor Flight honoring local heroes.
An estimated 80 veterans took the 14th Hy-Vee Honor Flight. In just a single day, the flight brought the veterans to nine memorials, monuments and museums. The sites included the National Air and Space Museum, the Lincoln Memorial, Air Force Memorial and more.
"I don't know if I got all the right words. Such an honor to be recognized for what we've done," veteran Donald Walton said.
Honor Flight of the Quad Cities has taken veterans to D.C. for free since 2008. The organization prioritizes WWII and Korean War veterans and veterans with a terminal illness. All veterans within a 75-mile radius of the Quad Cities are encouraged to apply.
News 8's Shelby Kluver was able to join the veterans on the journey. You can hear her share what she learned on the trip, as well as what the veterans themselves had to say about it, in the video above.
