CLINTON, Iowa — A suspect has been arrested after numerous reports of credit card fraud in Clinton earlier this year, according to a press release.
On Jan. 30, the Clinton Police Department learned that numerous skimmed credit cards were being used in the area. According to an arrest affidavit, police were able to identify a suspect vehicle from surveillance footage, which also showed an unknown male making transactions at several businesses.
The suspect vehicle was later spotted in the area on Monday, Feb. 12, according to the release. As a result, 26-year-old Sorin Tabac was arrested and charged for the incident. The affidavit says Tabac admitted to using the money to live on. He faces two charges of credit card fraud.
Police have not yet released where the skimming devices were located. News 8 has reached out for this information and has yet to hear back. Officials recommend looking out for the following to avoid card skimmers:
- If the card reader is built to accept a chip but is not working
- If the buttons on the card reader are hard to push or don't work well
- If the clerk says the card reader is not working
- Police say there are portable devices that can collect information. Police advise consumers to always keep an eye on the card.
