MUSCATINE, Iowa — A student at a Muscatine middle school was transported to the hospital Thursday morning after being hit by a vehicle, school officials said.

According to Susan Clark Junior High School Principal Jennifer Fridley, a vehicle hit a student on Kindler Avenue during morning drop-off on Thursday, Oct. 31. 911 was called and emergency personnel responded to the scene.

In an update sent just before noon, Fridley and Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies issued a joint statement saying the student is in stable condition.

Their full statement can be found below:

Dear Susan Clark Muskie Families,

I wanted to provide you with an update following this morning’s incident in which an SCJH student was struck by a vehicle. Our student was transported to UnityPoint Health and is in stable condition. SCJH counselors have assisted students who witnessed the accident and remain available as needed throughout the day.

As a school, we will review our drop-off and pick-up procedures with our SCJH students and families. Any student dropped off on Kinder Avenue must use the crosswalk (with the stop light) and/or the two drop-off lanes the school provides inside the yellow curb. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. We understand that Kindler Avenue is busy with two schools on the same street. We must work together to ensure everyone's safety.

We are grateful for the quick response from the Muscatine Fire Department, EMT, and Police, from our SCJH staff members, and the good samaritans who assisted while emergency responders were coming.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership with your student’s learning.
