Sterling juvenile arrested in connection to July shooting that injured 2 teenagers

Two teenagers were shot in Sterling while inside their vehicle on July 23. One of them remains hospitalized as of Wednesday.

STERLING, Ill. — A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection to a Sterling shooting that left two teenagers injured, police said. 

According to the Sterling Police Department, officers received reports of a shooting around 13th Avenue and East 5th Street shortly before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23. At the scene, investigators said they found two males with gunshot wounds. Police believe the victims were in a vehicle when the suspect fired at them, leading the car to crash into a power line pole.

One of the victims, a 14-year-old from Sterling, has since been released after receiving treatment for his injuries. Police said the second victim, a 17-year-old also from Sterling, remains hospitalized as of Wednesday, Sept. 11. 

Following a months-long investigation, police said they arrested a 17-year-old male from Sterling in connection to the incident. Since the suspect is a minor, his identity was not released by police. 

The suspect is in custody at a juvenile detention center and faces the following charges: attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm.
