Sterling man suspected of arson after police respond to domestic battery call

STERLING, Ill. — Update Wednesday, Oct. 2: Sterling police said they have arrested Alan G. Marshall on multiple charges. Arrest warrants were issued while Marshall was hospitalized for arson, residential arson and aggravated arson. He has also been charged with aggravated domestic battery and unlawful restraint.

A man is suspected of committing arson after Sterling police said they responded to a domestic battery call on Wednesday night.

According to police, officers responded to a residence in the 600 block of West Fifth Street around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Officers identified 48-year-old Alan Marshall as the suspect and claimed he fled when they arrived before barricading himself inside his residence. 

After this, officers said they saw fire coming from within the room Marshall was inside. Everyone inside the building was evacuated, and Marshall left the building shortly thereafter before being taken into custody.

Marshall was transported to a local hospital for treatment and remains hospitalized. Police said they have obtained arrest warrants for arson, residential arson and aggravated arson and that further charges are pending.
