ROCK FALLS, Ill. — A Sterling man is behind bars after a Monday morning domestic disturbance led to a standoff with police in Rock Falls, according to a Whiteside County Sheriff's Office news release.
Around 6 a.m., Whiteside County deputies and Rock Falls police officers responded to a residence in the 1900 block of Canal Street to investigate a report of a domestic disturbance.
The victim reported that they had been battered by 27-year-old Dayton Hicks, a member of the family or household.
Officers were told that Hicks was armed with a handgun at the time of the incident and had since fled the scene
Police later learned that Hicks was wanted on a county felony warrant.
Later, it was discovered that he had fled to a residence in the 200 block of Walnut Street. A small child and two other adults were also in the house with him. Law enforcement attempted to negotiate with Hicks via cell phone as he barricaded himself in an upstairs bedroom.
As negotiations faltered, authorities were able to remove a small child and an adult from the residence before securing the first floor and continuing talks with Hicks from inside.
The Whiteside County negotiator continued communicating with Hicks, who eventually surrendered himself to police after several hours. A woman who was inside the bedroom with Hicks also surrendered. Authorities did not disclose the woman's identity in their release.
Hicks was taken into custody at 10:25 a.m. on a Whiteside County warrant for unlawful use or possession of a firearm by a felon with a bond set at $150,000.
A search of the residence also led to the recovery of a handgun.
