Train derails in Clinton, spills over 1,000 gallons of fuel

Officials with the Clinton Fire Department responded to the scene around 11:42 p.m. Thursday. The spill was contained in the area, according to a press release.

CLINTON, Iowa — First responders tackled a large fuel spill late Thursday night in Clinton, Iowa, according to a press release from the city.

Around 11:42 p.m. on Feb. 8, firefighters with the Clinton Fire Department responded to a train derailment in the Union Pacific Rail Yard at South 23rd Street and Liberty Avenue. According to the release, one of the fuel tanks was punctured when the engine derailed, and between 1,000 to 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the ground. The release says it was contained to the area. 

Hazmat teams from the Union Pacific Railroad, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the City of Davenport were contacted to help with clean up. The release says no injuries were reported.
