Kraft Heinz in Davenport evacuated Thursday morning due to chemical leak

According to a Kraft-Heinz spokesperson, all employees were sent home after a refrigerant fluid leak was detected Thursday morning.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Employees at the Kraft Heinz facility in Davenport were evacuated Thursday morning due to an ammonia leak, according to city fire officials.

Crews with the Davenport Fire Department responded to the manufacturing facility around 6:40 a.m. to a report of an anhydrous ammonia leak. According to a DFD news release, all employees were safely evacuated by the time DFD's Hazardous Material Team arrived.

Fire crews found that the leak had been contained inside the engine room and ventilation has been started with exhaust fans. Crews eventually entered the building and isolated the valve to stop the leak. Officials stayed on the scene until ammonia readings dropped to an acceptable level.

Around 10:30 a.m., a security guard told News 8 crews at the scene that fire officials had been at the scene for over two hours.

Officials said that the leak was not a danger to other parts of the facility or surrounding properties. No injuries were reported and the company will resume air monitoring, DFD said.
