Flood warnings take effect in Illinois, Iowa

The National Weather Service Quad Cities has issued several flood warnings and flood watches for rivers in eastern Iowa and western Illinois.

MOLINE, Ill. — Tuesday and Wednesday's precipitation has caused the National Weather Service Quad Cities to issue flood warnings and watches for a number of riverside communities in Illinois and Iowa. 

Flooding Warning

Flood warnings and watches are in effect Wednesday until further notice along the Rock River in Moline and Joslin, impacting Rock Island, Henry and Whiteside Counties. 

NWS Quad Cities says moderate flooding is expected and cautioned residents not to drive around barricades or through flooded areas. 

The NWS has issued flood warnings for the following rivers:

  • The Rock River in Rock Island, Whiteside and Henry Counties in Illinois. The river has risen to 12 feet as of 8:45 p.m. Tuesday. The river is forecasted to continue rising to 15.2 feet on Saturday afternoon.
  • The Wapsipinicon River in Scott and Clinton Counties in Iowa. The flood warning is most likely to affect the area near DeWitt. The river has risen to 10.6 feet as of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. The river is forecasted to rise to 11.4 feet, with flood stage being 11 feet. 
  • The Skunk River in Des Moines and Henry counties in Iowa. The river has risen to 14.4 feet as of 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, with bankfull stage being 12 feet. The river is expected to rise to 15 feet Wednesday evening before falling below flood stage before midnight.

Flood Watch

The NWS has issued flood warnings for the following rivers:  

  • The Rock River in Whiteside County, near Como. The river had risen to 8.1 feet as of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. According to the NWS, the flood stage is 12.5 feet and could be reached early Friday morning.
  • The Green River in Henry County in Illinois, near Geneseo. As of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, the river had risen to 12 feet, with flood stage being 15 feet. According to the NWS, flood stage could be reached by Wednesday evening.
