New program unveiled by Davenport Fire to better respond to medical emergencies

DFD's new "File of Life" program is completely voluntary and asks residents to provide up-to-date health information so officials can better respond to crises.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — The Davenport Fire Department is encouraging residents to take part in a new program that can help them better respond to medical emergencies.

Most calls that the department responds to are medical-related. In order to have up-to-date health information during those calls, DFD has unveiled its "File of Life" program.

A File of Life is a medical form stored in a magnetized pouch that should be placed on your refrigerator for easy access. It gives first responders access to a patient's medical history in the event of an emergency. According to the City of Davenport's website, the form asks for health details like allergies, medications, emergency contacts and other critical information.

"It lets our first responders know that this is the most updated information," DFD Lt. Fire Marshal Zach Soliz said.

People who are at an increased risk for a medical emergency are encouraged to maintain a File of Life. It's available to all Davenport residents at no cost.
