DAVENPORT, Iowa — A Davenport student has been arrested after he brought a gun onto school property, police said.
On Wednesday, the school resource officer at Davenport North received information alleging a 16-year-old male student was in possession of a firearm at the school.
According to a press release from the Davenport Police Department, the student was called out of class, and the school resource officer did find a firearm in their possession. He was arrested and charged with carrying weapons on school grounds.
"Due to the quick actions of the school resource officer and North High School staff, a safe learning environment was maintained," DPD said in the release. "There was no disruption to the school day, no threats were made, and the school was not placed on lockdown."
Students, staff and family of Davenport North received the following statement from the school district:
"The Davenport Community School District continues to focus on ways to enhance the safety for our students of our schools and offer a safe learning environment. At Monday’s school board meeting, the Davenport School Board will discuss a plan to purchase and utilize weapon detection and door monitoring systems in all secondary schools in the district. These detection systems will enhance current security measures that are already in place and be used to screen students and visitors.
"DCSD continually evaluates our safety procedures and layers of security for our students. These systems will be a further deterrent and an added protection for our students and staff."
That meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 25. A list of upcoming Davenport school board meetings can be found here.
