DAVENPORT, Iowa — Classes were canceled at Madison Elementary School in Davenport on Monday after a fire broke out inside a second-floor classroom Sunday night.
According to a Davenport Fire Department news release, officials responded to the fire at 116 E. Locust Street around 10:45 p.m. and found light smoke in the air. Firefighters found heavy smoke and heat coming from a second-floor window. Crews pulled hose lines to the second floor and were able to extinguish the fire.
The building was searched for occupants and was found to be empty. The classroom in which the fire started sustained heavy fire and smoke damage while second-floor hallways sustained minor smoke staining. Fire crews remained on the scene for about two hours to check for hidden fire and to ventilate the building.
Utilities to the classroom were isolated at the breaker panel, allowing the rest of the building to have power.
No injuries were reported by civilians or firefighters. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
