CLINTON COUNTY, Iowa — The Clinton County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a new scam in the community.

According to a Friday press release, residents have reported receiving calls and emails from someone identifying themselves as a deputy with the sheriff's office. The scammer threatens to arrest them for failing to pay a "PPP or PPE loan" and will even provide a badge number. The release says the scammer will tell the person they failed to attend court for the loan, say there is now a warrant for their arrest and demand bond money to cover the warrant.

The sheriff's office says these calls and emails are fake, adding that law enforcement agencies will not demand payment over the phone. The department recommends immediately hanging up and not responding to any emails that appear to be a part of this scam.
