BURLINGTON, Iowa — A Burlington man and three of his four cats were able to escape a Wednesday morning house fire that officials believe started in the chimney.
According to the Burlington Fire Department, firefighters responded to the home in the 1100 block of Hagemann Avenue around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11. First responders found flames coming from the roof of the single-story home.
Officials said the owner was asleep at the time of the fire and was awakened by smoke alarms before safely exiting the home. The owner was able to escape with three of his four cats.
An investigation determined that the fire started in the attic near the chimney flue, with inadequate maintenance believed to be the cause of the blaze.
