10-year-old boy identified after drowning at Lake Potter in Rock Island

Officials say four children were swimming at the lake when they became distressed. Three of them were transported to a local hospital and their condition is unknown.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Update:

The victim of the drowning incident at Lake Potter on Monday has been identified as 10-year-old John Moo of Rock Island, according to Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson. 

Gustafson reports that Moo's cause of death was drowning, while the manner of death was accidental.

Moo was a student enrolled in the Rock Island-Milan School District, which released the following statement:

The Rock Island-Milan School District has been made aware of the death of one of our elementary school students after a tragic accident at Sunset Park Monday afternoon. RIMSD #41 is making support services available for families and staff, as part of our crisis support plan. We offer our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this terrible incident.

RIMSD #41 also sent a message to parents and guardians of students that provided additional information on support services available for those impacted. Services are available this Thursday and Friday, June 20 and 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Edison Junior High School, 4141 9th St. in Rock Island. For more details, the district asks parents/guardians to contact Roxanna Claude at (309) 793-5900 ex. 10222. 

The district says they will provide information on remembrance services when that becomes available.

A 10-year-old boy has died after an incident at Lake Potter in Rock Island, according to Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson. The boy's cause of death and identity have not been released at this time. 

The Rock Island Fire Department said crews responded to the scene at 1800 Sunset Lane around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 17 for a child missing in the water. 

Responding crews learned that four children had been swimming in the water and had become distressed. Two of them were able to get to shore on their own and the third received help from someone nearby. All three were transported to the hospital. The three children's conditions are unknown at this time. 

First responders conducted rescue operations from shore and from a department rescue boat launched from Sunset Marina. The Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department, Moline Fire Department, Big River Rescue, and Christian Aid Ministries assisted with the search.
