DAVENPORT, Iowa — Mike Schwertman, a U.S. Navy veteran, was in need of a ramp installed at his home after getting a knee replacement.
“I had called different places to see what it would cost me for a ramp and it was right around $4,000. And somebody said ‘Well, why don’t you call the VA?’” Schwertman said.
He called Veteran Affairs and they said they would work on getting in touch with someone who could help. Keith O'Neal, who goes by Shaq, showed up at Schwertman's house a few days later. He said he was ready to install the ramp for him at no cost.
That's why Schwertman nominated Shaq and the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association for the Pay It Forward award, sponsored by Ascentra Credit Union.
The CVMA will find out about veterans in need in the Quad Cities community and do whatever they can to help.
“They just kind of reach out to us, and we reach out to them. Verify that they were in the service and if we can make something happen, then we make something happen," Shaq said.
The group uses donations and community support to assist veterans with tasks at home, however big or small they may be.
"We build ramps, we’ve worked with like Home Depot and doing roofs with some people. Or like if they need a wider door in their bathroom because they’re in a wheelchair," Shaq said. “Sometimes it’s as simple as moving a washer and dryer for somebody because they don’t have the capabilities of doing it."
Making a difference in veterans' lives is all the motivation needed for these guys.
“It’s very humbling and satisfying knowing that you’re helping somebody out and they’re usually more than grateful for it," said Shaq.
If you know anyone who may need some assistance or if you want to offer any support to the group, you can contact the organization on their Facebook page here.
