GALESBURG, Ill. — Ginny Campbell is the president of OAKS Senior Center in Galesburg. The facility is used for meetings, special events and as a spot for senior citizens to gather.
“The senior center, here in Galesburg, we’re open nine to two every day except Saturday and Sunday. And they’re open for special occasions," Campbell said.
The center is self-supporting and depends on fundraising and donations to help keep its doors open. If you stop in, you'll find Mary Johnson. She has been volunteering at the center and serves as its vice president. She has been a huge help in keeping the center updated.
“Continuously, Mary’s always been very gracious. Physically, she is not able to help, but she tries to help financially as much as she can," Campbell said.
Johnson has fronted money to help replace blinds, faucets, and even help with utility bills. Her dedication to the senior center has earned her the Pay It Forward award, sponsored by Ascentra Credit Union.
Immediately, Johnson knew exactly what to do with the money.
“It’ll come right back to OAKS, yes, I’ll give it to the treasurer," Johnson said.
The center has become an important place for people to gather and find a sense of community.
“You know if you lose your mate, it’s a place to come and get acquainted with people, and we have a potluck every Tuesday and everybody’s welcome," said Johnson.
Keeping the facility in good shape and open to the public is why Johnson keeps helping all she can.
“If we didn’t have this, the people wouldn’t have no place to go. Of course the new library, people would be going to the new library, and checking it out. But it’s not the same thing as the fellowship you get here," Johnson said.
