DAVENPORT, Iowa — Luekinna Hodges is no stranger to the community. She serves others and lends a helping hand as the founder of Kinna's House of Love. On Sunday mornings, you can find her in Davenport, serving hot meals to the less fortunate.
“Kinna serves the homeless every Sunday at 11:30 at 6th and Vine Street. She serves them a hot, nutritious meal. And I’m so impressed with Kinna, she works so hard," said Chris Masterson.
Masterson has been working with Hodges since January to help with cooking and serving those meals. She sees how dedicated Hodges is to helping others and nominated her for the Pay It Forward award. Immediately, Hodges knew what the money was going to be used for.
“I’m thinking about how many more people I can feed right now. We can get some more meat, and we can get some more canned goods," Hodges said.
Serving these meals on Sunday mornings was important to her because there aren't many resources to getting food during those hours.
“This has been over a year now since I’ve been doing every Sunday. Even if I'm in the hospital or out of town, I’m getting somebody to get down there and feed my people," Hodges said.
She spends hours cooking these meals every week from her own kitchen. Hodges estimates she serves between 40 and 80 people each week.
“I'm going to need a bigger kitchen," Hodges said.
Hodges said having empathy for people in need and supporting others keeps her giving every day. She's always looking for volunteers and donations. If you are interested in helping with the weekly meals or donating a few items, you can visit her Facebook page to get in touch with her.
