1 dead after Monmouth house fire

Firefighters found 83-year-old James Barry Sr. inside the home while responding to the blaze, but he eventually died from his injuries.

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Update: On Wednesday, Feb. 14, the Warren County Coroner identified 83-year-old James Barry Sr. as the victim in this incident.

One person is dead following a house fire in Monmouth.

According to Monmouth Fire Department Chief Casey Rexroat, the fire started in a two-story home at 314 West 3rd Ave. around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13. While traveling to the home, firefighters said they were notified of one resident who was still inside.

Upon arriving on the scene, firefighters were able to evacuate the resident, but they succumbed to their injuries.

Firefighters took approximately two hours to completely extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
