North Scott YMCA previews new facility before Monday opening

The 44,00 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility has been in the works since 2014 and opens on Dec. 5.

ELDRIDGE, Iowa — The North Scott YMCA gave a sneak peek of its new facility Friday night, a few days before its grand opening.

President and CEO of YMCA of the Mississippi Valley, Brad Martell, said the project had been in the works since 2014.

"Persistence paid off and you can see this is such a beautiful facility that in the end everybody got I think what they wanted," Martell said.

The YMCA includes a state-of-the-art gym, aerobic studio, basketball court, waiting areas and an aquatic center.

"This is a very large aquatics facility for a building this size. We basically have a big lap pool, a leisure pool and splash pad for the little guys: one foot to two feet, two slides and everything so it's very family-friendly," said Martell. "I think we have everything, we did the leisure pool for water exercise for senior citizens. So there's something for everybody, we tried to keep track of every age group. This is a really beautiful facility."

North Scott swimmers will be able to use the pool for practice, as well as have activity buses drop them off.

Martell said they finished contracting just in time before the spike in housing prices.

"The building itself is around about 12 million dollars and then equipment is probably another seven or so. It was paid at the right time before the escalation and building crisis. So we've been just at the right time for this."

The North Scott Community YMCA grand opening will take place on Monday, December 5th at 4:30 AM.
