COAL VALLEY, Ill. — Back in January, heavy snowstorms damaged numerous exhibits at Niabi Zoo — delaying its opening date to April 30.
Due to ongoing renovation efforts, some of the exhibits will be temporarily closed during the 2024 season and are unavailable for viewing. To offset this, the zoo has reduced all admission costs by $2.
The zoo will also operate under a modified schedule, which can be found here.
More than 25 inches of wet, heavy snow hit the Niabi Zoo in January, damaging some animals' enclosures. The most significant were the collapse of the outdoor cathouse, sagging of the supports in the eagle enclosure, partial collapse of the Pallas's cat exhibit and roof damage in the aviary home to birds and guinea pigs. All animals were indoors during the storm and were not injured.
To help fund the repairs, the zoo has opened a snowstorm recovery fund for the public to send in donations. According to the zoo's website, the funds are 100% guaranteed to go directly to supporting their recovery from the record snow.
You can donate to support the recovery here.
