IOWA, United States — There's now a new way to access a digital version of your driver's license or ID in Iowa.
Through the IA Mobile ID app, there are just five simple steps to set yourself up with a digital ID. You can find those steps, as well as a download link on the Apple Store or Google Play, by clicking/tapping here. The program is free to download.
Anyone who lives in Iowa and has a valid driver's license or ID is eligible to use the app. The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) says Mobile ID can be used the same way you use your physical ID to verify your age and identity. However, leaders say it is not a replacement and you should still carry your physical card as a backup.
News 8's Charles Hart spoke with Iowa DOT's emerging technology program manager Toni Smith, about how people should trust this app and that your information is protected.
"You have to consent to release that information and businesses can't come and grab it from you," Smith said.
"If somebody asks you for your ID, you open up your mobile ID with that pin or biometric. And what you do is display a QR code for the business to scan and that QR code is encoded," Smith explained. "It only includes an encryption key encryption key, it does not include any information about the user."
Smith said one of the key benefits of this app for users is that it's contactless.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds says Iowa is the first state in the country to have statewide acceptance of Mobile ID.
The app is optional for people and businesses to use.
