Muscatine kitten rescued from storm drain by city workers

Muscatine city employees made a platform out of duct tape attached to a string to rescue the kitten from the storm drain.

MUSCATINE, Iowa — A kitten who ended up in a Muscatine storm drain is officially safe and sound.

According to Muscatine officials, a resident heard the feline meowing nearby the HNI Manufacturing Plant on East 5th Street. They notified local police, who sent Animal Control Officer Courtney Patel to investigate. Patel quickly called in some backup.

Zack Etzel, Jorge Laza, Chip Calcott, and Eric Evens from the Muscatine Sewer Department brought a camera used to take videos of sewer pipes and fed it underground approximately 20 feet, where they were able to spot the kitten. Once the feline was located, crews made a platform out of duct tape attached to a string, which they used to lift it to the surface.

“Without the teamwork between all departments I’m not sure what the outcome for the cat would have been. He was scared but was taken to the humane center for top notch care," Patel said.

It took approximately 45 minutes to get the kitten out of the drain.
