More than 200 dead fish found in Cedar Rapids following suspected pipe burst

According to the Iowa DNR, 450,000 gallons of chlorinated water was released into McLoud Run Trout Stream.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Officials with the Iowa DNR say they've identified an ongoing fish kill in Cedar Rapids.

On Tuesday, Jan. 23, Cedar Rapids officials reported that approximately 450,000 gallons of chlorinated drinking water were released from an unoccupied building at 4425 Cedar Point Road NE, which spilled over into McLoud Run Trout Stream. Officials said they believe the water was released by a fire suppression line that burst during recent cold weather. Since the spill, DNR staff have identified between 200 and 300 dead fish in the stream.

If you see a dead or stressed fish in a lake or river, the Iowa DNR asks you to call their 24-hour spill line at 515-725-8694. Officials say a speedy response can help identify the cause of a fish kill and potentially even stop one in progress.
