ILLINOIS, USA — According to U-Haul officials, Illinois has more people looking for greener pastures elsewhere than people packing their bags to move to the Prairie State.
Every year, U-Haul uses one-way customer transactions to figure out which states have the biggest net gains and net losses from movers. In 2023, that data included more than 2.5 million one-way bookings, and it found that Illinois is losing a lot more travelers than it's gaining. According to the company's findings, Illinois came in 48th place; only Massachusetts and California had a larger booking deficit.
“Migration to states in the Southeast and Southwest is still very pronounced. Demand for one-way equipment out of certain markets in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast mirrors what we have seen during recent moving cycles," U-Haul President John Taylor said.
Iowa is right in the middle of the road, taking 24th place in the rankings. You can review the data for all 50 states here.
