Moline becomes 'gigabit city' with Metronet fiber optic network

The City of Moline and Metronet have completed a 100% fiber optic network, making Moline a "gigabit city" with around 125 miles of fiber lines buried underground.

MOLINE, Ill. — The City of Moline and Metronet have completed the construction of its 100% fiber optic network, making Moline a "gigabit city."

In a Tuesday, Oct. 8 news release, officials announced the completion of the project. According to a news release, Metronet invested more than $19 million in the project, during which time 125 miles of fiber lines were installed underground and 60 miles of fiber were added to city utility poles. The project launched in December of 2022, with construction beginning in February of 2023. 

"Today marks a significant milestone for Moline," Moline Mayor Sangeetha Rayapati said. "Our partnership with Metronet has not only enhanced the quality of life for our residents but has also positioned Moline as a leader in technological innovation. Access to high-speed internet is essential for both families and businesses, and we're thrilled to see this project come to fruition."

The completion of the network means that Moline residents can access high-speed internet with speeds up to 5 Gbps. Businesses can subscribe for speeds up to 10 Gbps or higher.
